Women of the Sea
Official Opening
Our new exhibition, 'Women of the Sea' was lauched during two days on the 25th and 26th of July 2022. It is a video booth portraying five women who have contributed to the maritime world, namely Ellen Owen (captain's wife), Jane Jones (Porthdinllaen harbourmistress), Beti Huws (fishing net repairer), Mary Parry (ship owner), and Mali Parry-Jones (Porthdinllaen lifeboat member). Our Friends and Volunteers, together with the Lottery players, had the opportunity to see the exhibition in advance on Monday. Then, on the following day, the exhibition was officially opened by Elinor Elis, Ellen Owen's great-great-niece. On Tuesday night, the historian Elin Tomos came over to give a lecture about the role of women in the slate-mining communities, which was in line with the theme of recognizing the contribution of women. Thanks to Sian Shakespear for coordinating the project, and Rob Zyborski for filming. Acknowledgment to the actors as well, namely Mared Llywelyn, Meinir Pierce Jones, Nel Roberts and Catrin Roberts, and to Mali Parry-Jones for telling her story. The Project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Garfield Weston Foundation.
