A good start to our summer activities.
The first event to be held this summer was a guided geological walk around Cilan, led by our expert Daniel Evans. The sun shone for us and the views were stunning ! We will be holding another walk soon, this time to the top of Garn Boduan. Anyone interested in our early history and hillforts - this is one for you!

Job opportunity for seasonal cleaner
The museum is looking for a conscientious and honest cleaner to undertake cleaning before we open at Easter, and thereafter at regular intervals throughout the season. For further information and an application form please contact Meinir Pierce Jones, Manager on 07769928268 or message the museum’s Facebook page. Closing date March 10.
Exciting developments in 2018!
A gang of helpers have been busy in the museum packing, wrapping and covering everything up. Why? Well, during the second week of January construction work will start on a second floor storage area for our artefacts – located over the cafe and shop area. This will mean that we are able to move our collection of artefacts from the empty shop where they are currently stored into the safety of the museum itself. The work will be completed in time for our Easter opening.

Geological Guided Walk
We had a most interesting Guided Walk on Sunday 18 September led by Dr Daniel Evans. We walked the promontory at Cilan and Dr Evans explained the geology of this area, including the remains of a small manganese quarry and an extremely rare feature called an ‘angular unconformity’! The rain held off until the very end and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the walk.
Archaeological Exhibition
The exhibition featuring the archaeological finds at St Mary's has been postponed until next Spring. It will be well advertised beforehand.
Millenium Volunteers
Photographed are local students Llio Mererid Owen and Mared Erin Jones (looking a lot happier that the legendary Luned Bengoch!). They have been volunteering with us under the Gwirvol - Millenium Volunteers Scheme - a super initiative which has provided us with their enthusiastic support over the summer. They in turn will have had great work experience. They've been brilliant!

Accreditation!
The Llŷn Maritime Museum has recently received the very good news that the museum has been given full accredited status. The museum reopened in July 2014 following a period of redevelopment and the Artefacts Committee have been working diligently since them to attain this award. The Accreditation Scheme sets out nationally-agreed standards, which inspire the confidence of the public and funding and governing bodies, and enables museums to assess their current performance and develop their services.

The Play Boat has arrived
Is has a been a busy time at the museum recently as Alice Midmore, a young carpenter from Tregaron who learnt her skills at Felin Uchaf Traditional Skills Building Centre in Rhoshirwaun, has been up to assemble the play boat which she built for us with local oak and larch. It is based on the granite exporting steamers which used to carry the stone to local coastal ports and Ireland. The grant for this project was donated by the Welsh Aggregate Levy Fund.
We hope children will have a great time playing in it!

The educational programme for Primary schoolchildren has got off to a great under the guidance of Dylan Evans. Official Opening 2014
A large and joyful congregation gathered in Nefyn on 19 July for the official opening of the Museum, following years of hard work to raise its profile and secure funding. The event was held at Capel Isa –afterwards people were invited to wander down to the museum for a look round and then either return to the chapel for a celebration tea or enjoy a glass of the local brew Cwrw Llyn in the gazebo behind St Mary’s. At the ceremony, Harri Richards sang lyrics written by the late Joni Owen celebrating the original museum back in 1977, Roger Stephens Jones read an excerpt from Growing up Among Sailors, Anna Georgina played some maritime tunes on her harp and the former vicar Wheldon Thomas spoke about the old museum. The newly renovated museum was opened by local historian and lecturer J Dilwyn Williams.
