Access Statement
Access Statement
This access statement does not contain personal options as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services we offer all our guests/visitors.
Introduction
Situated in the village of Nefyn, 6 miles from the market town of Pwllheli the Llŷn Maritime Museum (Amgueddfa Forwrol Llŷn) offers visitors a chance to explore the story of the area’s maritime and social history. The museum is in a former church (St Mary’s) on Stryd y Mynach and is easily spotted by looking for the ship weathervane on the church tower.
The Llŷn Maritime Museum is a one storey building (with a mezzanine where artefacts are stored – no public access). The ground floor houses our exhibition, gift shop and coffee bar.
The museum is fairly small and a visit should not take more than an hour. Visitors can ask to view a film about the history of Nefyn which prolongs a visit by approximately 25 minutes.
A staff member or volunteers are always on hand should you require any assistance.
We look forward to welcoming you. If you have any queries or require any assistance please phone 01758 721313 or e-mail afllmm@yahoo.com
Pre-Arrival
For details and maps of how to reach us, please use the directions section of our website. Alternatively, you can plan your journey by car or public transport using the Gwynedd County Council website or Traveline Cymru
The nearest main-line railway station is at Pwllheli, six miles away. A no.8 bus will bring you into Nefyn – buses run approximately every hour. There is also a taxi rank at the station.
The museum (LL53 6LB) is located just off the Nefyn to Llithfaen road (B ) set back from the main road. Getting off the bus at the crossroads in the centre of the village (Y Groes), walk down Stryd y Plas (Palace Street) on the right, and take the first turning on the left, which will lead you to the museum.
Car parking and arrival
Visitors may park in front of the museum (no restrictions) or in the car park on the corner of Stryd y Mynach. Please park on the side of the stream; the other side is reserved for local residents. There is no charge for parking.
There are steps and a disabled access leading to the museum. The ramp leading up to the museum and the pathway to the Museum and picnic area are paved. Guide dogs are welcome.
Entrance and Reception
The entrance to the Museum and shop are situated on the ground floor – with direct and flat access through the porch; there is no handrail. The reception desk is opposite you as you enter the museum. Entry is free, but there is a donations box which staff/volunteers will point to!
Inside the museum is floored in granite; there are no rugs or carpets. Seating is provided here and there within the museum for viewing old photographs, listening to oral history and watching film clips. The main body of the museum and the shop and coffee bar are well lit. The museum is suitable for wheelchair users.
There is a ramp (stored on the right hand side of the main room, near the chairs) for access to the stage, if necessary. If a visitor wishes to ascent to go to the stage, he/she should ask a member of staff/volunteer for assistance to fit the ramp in place.
At the far end of the museum, to the left of the stage, is a replica cabin. This is only partly lit. On entry, a soundtrack is played which gives the impression of being aboard ship but fear not; the floor is level and stationary.
Shop and coffee bar
By the entrance to the museum, there is a small shop selling gifts, memorabilia, children’s toys, books and cards (there are two turnstiles – one for cards and one for books).
The coffee bar consists of one long table, and a high backed bench, with chairs on the other side. Wheelchair users can sit on the near side.
Guests should sit and they will be served, or they can ask at the desk. Teas, coffees, cold drinks, cake, biscuits and ice cream are served but no meals. Please let us know if you have any food allergies.
The reception desk is low, and accessible to both children and wheelchair users when paying for goods.
Toilet
There is one unisex toilet and disabled toilet which is on the right hand side as you enter. The door is 925mm (36½ins ) wide. There is 850 mm/33½ ins transfer space to the right of the toilet, when facing the door. There are rails either side of the toilet and a rail by the sink. The flooring is non-slip. The light comes on automatically. The sink stands 780mm (31ins) from the floor, and there is a rail on the left hand side; the water can be hot, so take care. There is also a baby changing unit in the toilet.
